Appearances

I loosened my grip on the razor as blood appeared around my ankles where I had nicked it. Shaving's a bitch. "Why am I doing this again?" I wondered.

"You're crossing a line." Said my brother Tye. I told him about this costume party we were having for our batch, and my plan to come in drag. But the more friends reacted negatively, the more curious I became. What's the big deal exactly? I was bent on finding that out as I got ready for the Senior's Ball.

A make-up artist friend volunteered to do my hair, and promised to lend me a gown. She was a regular fixture in gay pageants and she knew her thing. Initially I thought of the idea of coming in drag as a joke, but after I told her, she jumped up and down excitedly at her new project. She was going to turn me from a "duckling to a swan".

We live in a society that marginalizes gay people- the more effeminate you are, the more people will think of you as "weak" or "superficial". My intention was to prove that no matter what one wears, or how one walks, or how one talks,it has little to do with what's inside- a person's character and substance. In my case I wanted to show that nothing has changed- I am still the same person, no less. Not even 1/4 inch thick make-up or four-inch heels will make me drop my IQ points or berate my personhood.

As usual, I thought, if I am to do this, I better do it right. If I looked like a walrus in a dress, then by no means am I going to parade like that in public. Yeah, that's the vain me speaking. So anyway I began with the basics: remove all body hair from legs to armpits so that I don't look like some deranged cavewoman.

As I stood in front of the mirror, I was amazed how long and slim my legs looked. Regularly they were covered under tufts of hair and all, so I didn't quite expect that. I slipped into silver 4 inch sandals and tried walking. Nice. But once in a while I'd trip, causing my ankle to sprain a little bit.

I put on sweatpants and quickly cleaned my room, then left for a friend's place, where the transformation would continue.

I was given three gowns to choose from: a white halter, a lime green serpentine gown, and a purple gown with a thigh-high slit. My female friends helped me dress up as they took turns in having their faces done. My oh my, they fit alright, but my shoulders were too big I looked like a Linebacker. My friend Aya lent me her dress which was a relatively modest empire cut dress with sleeves.

My friend kept making jokes as she did my face- there was a brownout and she was forced to apply make-up in candlelight. She said they needed to prepare formalin because of the way I looked- reclined on a chair while a friend held a candle before me. Finally, the accessories were worn, and as a finishing touch- two rolled up socks placed on either side of my chest for breasts.

While we were in the car on the way to the hotel, I could hear my heart beating. Oh my, I was actually going to be seen in public looking like this, I almost panicked! Finally, I took a deep breath and just stepped out of the car into the street and then the hotel lobby. As we entered the ballroom, jaws dropped. I couldn't quite hear a thing because people were shrieking and taking pictures. Well, for one night only, why not revel in my outfit? As I thought, it wasn't really that big a deal. I made jokes and laughed with friends. Dressing up in drag wasn't the end of the world, that's for sure.

As I paused for a bit in my seat I had another thought- the essence or substance of everything really goes beyond what our two eyes can see. The essence of a woman isn't in the long legs or beautiful breasts. It is the role that she plays as a daughter or wife or mother that makes her who she is. She nurtures, she cares, and she loves- that's what makes her a woman. Similarly some people blindly measure their happiness through ITRs and bank accounts, big houses or nice clothes, as opposed to having great relationships and a growing maturity. And in the same way, a student nurse isn't measured for the number of medals he or she earned, but in the dedication and the quality of care that is rendered to their patients.

Suddenly, in that room filled with loud and giddy BS Nursing graduates, I learned an unexpected lesson. Days later, I laughed like crazy as they uploaded the photos of the Senior's Ball. We really did have fun that night. I was a little embarrassed at those who took pictures of my boxers peeking from my skirt- another lesson, when one wears a skirt the legs must always be pressed together. Hahaha! Oh well, who cares? I got nice legs.

Mooned

After the demise of Bella, Edward and Jacob visited her mausoleum. The two fought wildly, and somehow Jacob found himself on top of Edward.

One thing led to another and then... (Newmoon, gay version lol)

How Thadie Got His Groove Back

Part 2: Dorm

It was 30 minutes till my Statistics Finals in Diliman and I needed to take the edge off. Some people would drink, some would meditate, I on the other hand (excuse the pun), decided to do “the thing”. I tiptoed to my small room at the end of the hall.

It was still early in the morning, and I could hear the soft snores of my dorm mates. I glanced at the hallway one more time before gingerly closing the door.

Click! The sound of the lock as it slid into place. It was quiet enough to hear the neighbor’s TV from my closed window. Some sort of morning show on. Crap. With my movements as slick as a hot knife through butter, I unzipped myself and lay on the bed.

Ok. Think of the hunky Law student two rooms down the hall. Remember he always walks around in his underwear?

I started to touch myself.

Oh yeah, I remember that afternoon when he slept with his door open. That was some feast for the eyes… Wait till I get my hands on that-

Without me noticing, my pace was getting quicker and my elbows started banging on the wall.

“So close, so close…”

“Shit!” I noticed the time: 10 minutes till my exam begins. I fixed myself hurriedly and ran all the way to the venue which was in the Law building.

Surprisingly, I was able to answer most of the questions (yeah, considering this was take two shhh!) with ease, and I finished ahead of time. I submitted my paper to the proctor and left.

Maybe it was because I fantasized about my lucky charm- my Law student dorm mate’s crotch- that I was able to do well in the exam. Hello, the venue was in the Law building too! I giggled to myself.

The guys were having the usual Friday boozefest when I got home later that day. I was about to refuse (as I normally did) when the landlord’s son invited me to join, but he suddenly pulled me to the center of the group.

He put his arm around my shoulder.

“Pare, narinig ka daw nila kanina nagja-jakol.”

Me, looking incredulous: “Excuse me?”

I put on my purest I’m-a-lamb-and-I-am-wholesome look to profess my innocence. Good thing I was saved from further inquisition and embarrassment when another dorm mate chimed in. He said his maid once caught him jerking off at home, and told his folks.

“Wala yan!” Another ones relates his own story.

The embarrassment was now gone. I picked up my first gin-pomelo drink and raised the glass.

Cheers, guys.

Soaked

The shock was so complete it didn’t register at first.

First off, I was expecting the water to be only up to my chest, but it turned out to be neck-deep. Second, the water was so cold my body seemed just frozen stiff as I dove in. So much for my eagerness to be the first one in the pool.

This was the first day of swimming class, and I was half-submerged in the icy water with the rest of my classmates. Our teeth chattered incessantly as our instructor yelled instructions through his megaphone. To make the matters worse, a batch of curious young people had just started gathering at the poolside to watch our water torture.

“Do bubbling for fifteen counts!” “Everyone do flutter kick!” “Let’s do freestyle!” After twenty minutes of crazed movement, the cold wasn’t so bad anymore- I was getting the hang of it. Rusty as my swimming skills were, at least I could still do a lap.

Of course there were excellent swimmers in our batch. There was a guy from Borongan, Samar (a coastal town) who dove in and swam the entire length of the pool with just one breath. Great, as if we’ll all be that good by the time this is over. On the other hand, I think I’ll fare better with this than my last practical exam in basketball and softball.

I was swimming around leisurely, when I happened upon the guy from Borongan who was practicing his somersaults.

“How do you do that?” I asked.

“Easy, he said.” His powerful arms pulled at the water, then reaching the far end of the pool he did an underwater somersault and his legs kicked the edge of the pool to propel him quickly back to where I was standing.

I will probably never learn to do than in month’s time, let alone in two hours. Nevertheless, I tried. I started with freestyle, following the line of blue tiles. Looking at the bottom of the pool was difficult because I had left my swim goggles at home. I saw the edge, which signaled that I should do the somersault. It started ok as my head dipped in the water, but as the lower part of my body went above my head, I lost balance and tilted sideward.

“Uggh!” I stood up feeling like something was burning up my nose. I ignored it and once again tried. Same thing. By the third try I was feeling dizzy already.

The megaphone sounded. “Okay, the class is dismissed. You may take your showers.” The instructor said.

Grateful, I pulled myself out of the pool, eyes blurry, and with my nose and ears clogged with pool water.

Gay People are Assets to Society

Here's why:Most people who are in creative industries and the arts are gay. Goes with a very developed right brain, I suppose.
You get comedy. Who else can give an otherwise bland crowd some spice and witty banter but us? Impersonations, stand up routines, and just plain hilarious “pang-ookray”- baby, it runs in the blood.
We keep a lot of businesses alive. Where would gyms be without us? Bath houses, bars, spas, boutiques… Not to mention the beauty industry.
We are achievers. Alexander the Great, hello!
Behind every fabulous woman is her gay best friend,
and behind every male star is his gay director.
The next step in evolution? I’d like to think so.

Hala!

I just received this a while ago via e-mail. This is of course fictitious, though it might have striking resemblance to the deals made by our officials.. Hmm bato bato sa langit!
Three contractors are bidding to fix the White House fence. One from the Philippines , another from Mexico and the third an American. They go with a White House official to examine the fence. The American contractor takes out a tape measure and does some measuring, then works some figures with a pencil.
"Well," he says. "I figure the job will run about $900: $400 for materials, $400 for my crew and $100 profit for me."
The Mexican contractor also does some measuring and figuring, then says,"I can do $700: $300 for materials, $300 for my crew and $100 profit for me."
The Filipino contractor doesn't measure or figure, but leans over to the White House official and whispers: "$2,700."The official, incredulous, says, "What? You didn't even measure like the other guys! How did you come up with such a high figure? How do you expect me to consider your service with that bid?"
"Easy," the Pinoy explains, "$1,000 for you, $1,000 for me and we hire the guy from Mexico ".
The next day, the Pinoy and the Mexican are working on the fence . .

Top Booba Moments

Ring ring!

CSR: “Pizza hut, how can I help you?”

Thad: “Mag-oorder po ng pizza.”
CSR: “Anong variety, Sir?”

Thad: “Ano po yung pinaka-mura?”

CSR: (snickers)
-----------------------------------

Applying at Leyte National High School:

“Ma’am, i-confirm ko lang po yung requirements. Report card, Long brown envelope, at one times one ID picture?”

----------------------------------

In my nervousness at meeting a very good looking, intelligent guy, he said something but it just slipped by. I realized he was waiting for a response because he was looking at me intently.

I turned to the person beside me and asked in a loud voice, “Ano daw?”

Boy, that was the last I saw of him.
----------------------------------

CSR Thad, looking for sympathy from a Team Manager.
Thad: “Mother, na-suspend ako!”

TM: “Maldita ka kasi!”
---------------------------------

Grade 3, Science and Technology recitation, I was asked to define science.

“Science is a large body of knowledge…” (Forgets the rest) …“found in the dictionary.”
---------------------------------

Director: “Why should we promote you to ACCM over the rest of the candidates?”

“Uhhh. Umm.” I blacked out. Totally.

I felt like a beauty contestant who was just asked, “Which would you rather be, very beautiful, or very intelligent.” And then she freezes and her silence already gave the obvious answer.

I could have answered because of my strong performance as a TM. Because of my team statistics. Because of my projects implemented company-wide. Because I can handle the job better than most TMs. Because I can multi-task. Because I got my team of 27 pasaways to get 99.7% attendance for the past quarter, damn it!

“Because I’m creative.” I stammered. (Art contest ba ito?)

Director: (Ano daw???)

Kwentong Pagkain

This will be my first post in Filipino, which I’m a little squeamish about. My lowest grades since time immemorial had always been: Math, PE (I hated sports when I was younger, though I crave for it now), and Filipino. Ask me to read aloud in Filipino and I’d stammer a lot, but ask me to read in English and I can deliver it either with an American or a British accent with no trouble. Nakakahiya! Pero, Waray Waray ako, hindi Tagalog so I never really use Filipino that often. Lusot!!

Ayoko ng lasa ng Beefloaf. Yung Fiesta, alam mo yun?

Romance ala Brokeback Mountain

One of the redeeming scenes in the rather disappointing Scary Movie 4 is a spoof of the famous lovescene between Jack and Ennis in Brokeback Mountain. Enjoy! ; ) "Hey man, I'm not on the down low or anything."
"Hey, what are you doing?"
"Just grabbing some nuts."
"CJ?"
"Just wanna eat some 'penuus'. See? Peanuts."
"I’ve been alone with you in my mind. In my dreams I’ve kissed your lips a thousand times.."
"..I sometimes see you pass outside my door. Hello, is it me your looking for.."
(the duo sing Lionel Richie's Hello)
Oh dear, I feel sorry for the small guy.

Now Showing: Political Divas

With reverence akin to watching a Claudine Baretto-Piolo Pascual soap opera, people hungrily tune in the evening news to hear the latest in Philippine politics. Only in the Philippines will you find politicians who entertain (they are a lot of showbiz personalities who are put into power, after all) better than they legislate. I personally handpicked my favorite political divas who never fail to catch my attention.

Imelda Marcos

Who doesn’t know Madame and her Manolos? A documentary about Imelda showed everything from her and Ferdinand Marcos’ rise to power (they were considered a “love team” then, an image the public adored), their eventual downfall, and of course, a showcase of her extravagance. The funniest parts were when she discussed her philosophical mumbo-jumbo, scribbling away on a sketchpad with a marker. It was so incoherent and out-of-this-world that I couldn’t stop giggling.

I haven’t seen her much lately though, any news?

Loren Legarda

No non-sense from this one. She is an excellent journalist (and was a cum laude graduate of UP) who once anchored The World Tonight and hosted the acclaimed The Inside Story. Loren has always been active in office with her Anti-Domestic Violence Act, Ecological Solid Waste Management Law, Humanitarian and Peace Commission, and the Luntiang Pilipinas program.

Human rights advocate, environmentalist, senator, journalist, and mother. What doesn’t she bring to the table?

Tessie Aquino-Oreta

On the opposite side of the spectrum, we have the notorious Dancing Queen. She earned the nickname after doing a disgraceful “cheerleader routine” during Estrada’s impeachment trial. An act that would immortalize her, as the videos were shown over and over, and later became an essential part of every skit on TV that time.

She tried unsuccessfully to redeem herself by doing a 30-second waste-of-time political ad where she did a Gloria, and apologized for her behavior. Mind you, it was unlike Madam President’s flat “I am sorry”, but a rather lengthy one, complete with emotions, teary eyes, and a quivering voice. ..”Nasaktan ko kayo..” she says, with the intensity of Meryl Streep.

And the Oscar goes to..

Miriam Defensor-Santiago

Miriam is my favorite. She’s kooky and outspoken and never fails to make me grin from ear to ear. My favorite line from Ma’am is “I will jump headfirst from a helicopter in Luneta if Estrada gets removed from power.” Days later, Estrada gets the boot via People Power 2 (hah! I will never forget going to Edsa with friends chanting “Erap Resign!” on top of our lungs) and she recants with “I lied.”, then laughs maniacally at the camera.

Always the spitfire, she has something to say about everything and about everyone. I’ll certainly be waiting here like a devoted Flordeluna fan for new episodes starring these ladies.

Seres nuevamente descubiertos!!

After a grueling seven day deliberation, taxonomists from all over the world have agreed that they found five new species endemic to the Philippines, believed to have evolved from Homo sapiens. They will be revealing this to the public for the first time, so prepare yourself!!

Placentus regia. A creature believed to produce cosmetic products from her loins. Pandaca acutifolia. Now considered the smallest creature on earth.
Uragona hadhada. Mysteriously able to mate with both sexes, including with other species.
Luffa cylindrica. Gave new meaning to the words "body scrub".
Matronus maximus. Believed to have been extinct but reappeared with a vengeance. Highly venomous; please shoot immediately or otherwise hit on the head with a heavy blunt object. Clink on this link for more Madam Auring misadventures.

“Soup dish” atbp.

I asked a rather nice sales lady, “Miss, hain an mga soap dish niyo?” (Miss, where can I find the soap dishes?)

“Didi, Sir.” (Right here, Sir) She says, as she leads me toward the Kitchenwares section. She stops upon racks of bowls (seeing the puzzled look plastered on my face), “An ano an iyo Sir, an durudako?” (Were you looking for the bigger ones, Sir?)

I had to smile. She thought I was looking for “soup dish”.

7up

I placed a 1.5 L bottle of 7up in the fridge (which still had half a liter content), intending on guzzling it down over lunch. I was shocked, hours later, to see the bottle full. Apparently our over-enthusiastic household help, thinking it was water, placed it under the sink and filled it up. #@%!!

Mag-iodized salt tayo

My uncle had a kumpadre over, and he asks the boy (a male helper) to prepare coffee. He takes the cups, fills them both with coffee powder and iodized salt (thinking probably that it was sugar), and adds water.

I peered through the door just in time to see both men, with indescribable facial expressions, spray their coffee after taking a sip.

On the bright side, they will reduce the chance of dementia in old age, thanks to that dose of Iodine! Diba the boy had good intentions?!

Professor X

“Sa Palarong Pambansa, rain or shine the events must go on.” Time is very essence.”

Ano daw?

Dubious don

I was worried I was supposed do my shoulders again the following day at the gym, so I ask the trainer. He says, “Ang wi-nork out natin ngayon ay abs (pointing to biceps), kaya pwede tayong mag-shoulders bukas.”

I surely won’t hire the guy as my Anatomy tutor.

Sinister cosmetic

For those of you who still are not acquainted, you can click this. Rhaulynmae, in her quest for beauty and the elusive Chinese-girl look, buys some Chin Chun Su. She naturally parades this in Gaisano (a local department store), making sure everyone notices her in her short-shorts, t-shirt, and headband outfit.

Aside from containing Zinc Oxide, apparently this cosmetic may cause severe reactions in some people, before (daw) turning you into a beauty. About a week after applying the sickeningly sweet-smelling cream, large meteoric zits appeared all over Rhaulyn’s face. It was so severe that Mike Enriquez would have looked flawless beside her. They only subsided after she stopped applying.

She swore off Chin Chun Su, and said hello to Ate Vi’s Eskinol (the one with those white crystals at the bottom of the bottle). “Isa pa Direk, please?” ; )

Strange Customs

A friend sent this to me, these practices certainly brings "crazy" to a new level. The ones in red font are my comments..

In Lebanon, men are legally allowed to have sex with animals, but the animals must be female. Having sexual relations with a male animal is punishable by death.
(Right. Because sex with a male animal, that's crazy.)
In Bahrain, a male doctor may legally examine a woman's genitals, but is prohibited from looking directly at them during the examination. He may only see their reflection in a mirror.(Reminds me of Perseus and Medusa)

Muslims are banned from looking at the genitals of a corpse. This also applies to undertakers; the sex organs of the deceased must be covered with a brick or piece of wood at all times.
(So, only construction materials are allowed to cover the area?)

The penalty for masturbation in Indonesia is decapitation.
(Wonder which head?)
There are men in Guam whose full-time job is to travel the countryside and deflower young virgins, who pay them for the privilege of having sex for the first time. Reason: under Guam law, it is expressly forbidden for virgins to marry.
(Dream job for straight men)

In Hong Kong, a betrayed wife is legally allowed to kill her adulterous husband, but may only do so with her bare hands. The husband's lover, on the other hand, may be killed in any manner desired.
(Monogamy must be pretty popular in HK)
Topless saleswomen are legal in Liverpool, England -but only in tropical fish stores.
(But of course..)

In Cali, Colombia, a woman may only have sex with her husband, and the first time this happens, her mother must be in the room to witness the act.
(Gross!..)
In Maryland, it is illegal to sell condoms from vending machines with one exception: prophylactics may be dispensed from a vending machine only "in places where alcoholic beverages are sold for consumption on the premises."
(Now this makes sense hahaha!)

Di ta Guae Yong Khee

A friend e-mailed this to me. I guess we may need to learn a new language to avoid this ; )

Nag-aaral ako sa La Salle . Ang dami kong kaklaseng Intsik. Apelyidong Uy, Lim, Tan, Co, Go, Chua, Chi, Sy, Wy, at kung anu-ano pa. Sex Substitutes

To our English-only readers, I’m afraid most of the punchlines are in gayspeak or Filipino.. Perhaps you can try to learn a little bit. ; )

Manash!

It’s soft, tasty, a little salty parang… Natumbok mo mother! Alams na natin kung ano yon.

2. Kumain nga maraming Curly Tops. It’s sweet, it’s cheap, it’s the Philippine version of Hersheys! I swear, manginginig ka sa tamis after sa pangatlong box mo. Parang hinahalikan ka all over. Etching!

Another alternative is to have a great workout at the gym. Take note ate, may mga cuties din dito! The rush of endorphins after a great workout is tantamount to the feeling of an orgasm. Huy, secret lang natin yun ha!

Build on your friendships and relationships. Malay mo, the right guy is just around the corner.
