The Big Three-Oh

As the waiters cleared the last of the dishes from our table, we became quiet. The laughter had faded away as the night deepened, and slowly, patrons left until there were only four of us- my high school close friends whom I’ve known for fifteen years: Remejoy, a licensed Med Tech who now worked as an editor; Frances, a Bachelor of Laws graduate who is presently teaching in UP Tacloban; and Royce, an Accountancy graduate who just earned his Doctor of Medicine, and is presently a busy post-graduate intern.

This year, we all turn thirty.

“When I failed the Bar exam, I stopped and asked myself- have I just wasted my twenties?” Frances said. It was an honest and very candid thing to say for our usually reserved friend.

“I know the feeling.” I blurted out.

They all looked at me.

“I think all of us, at some point, felt disillusioned when things didn’t turn out exactly the way we planned.”

It was true, so few of us actually followed a straight path when it came to careers. Majority accepted whatever dead-end, entry-level positions were available, and that is a tiny detail which was never mentioned to us in our four years in college. They failed to inform us that actual career growth happens somewhere in your thirties.

“I think we’re all afraid that we haven’t made any difference at all. That you fell short of your own expectations, that even graduating from a prestigious school is no guarantee of success or happiness.”

We looked at each other and smiled, with that same look of recognition on our faces.

“France, you and I are on completely different sides of the spectrum, and yet we share the same sentiments.”

My friend Frances was someone you’d call an ideal student- she majored in Psychology in UP Tacloban, then worked in an NGO as she got her Master’s Degree in Diliman. By the time she was in her mid-twenties, she began her studies in Bachelor of Laws.

I on the other hand, cruised through my youth with neither urgency nor a sense of purpose. I wanted to “maximize my twenties” and by that, I meant have the most fun as I could.

With this philosophy, I shot out like a loose cannonball. It was not that I was lazy or stupid; I was actually quite good with anything that I put my mind into. I helped design a museum when I was 20, which won Best Thesis in the UP College of Architecture. But by the time I saw how much my colleagues were earning in entry-level positions I was disheartened. I chose to work in a Call Center instead- which at some point made me choose between finishing my last units in Hardscape Construction and accepting a promotion. I chose the latter.

Before I resigned my job during my mid-twenties, I was earning more than most of my contemporaries but sadly was now back to square one, as I enrolled in the College of Nursing. As I celebrated my 28th birthday, a student once more, I also asked myself- have I wasted my twenties?

“We’ve all been there.” Remejoy said.

“Quarter life crisis.” Royce said.

“Well, none of us plays life with marked cards. At least we all got a chance to correct our mistakes along the way, and keep going towards the elusive success and happiness.” I philosophized.

“Maybe we’re just getting old.” Frances quipped.

We all laughed. It was one of those cherished moments with friends when you just let your hair down and be honest. If anything, I was relieved that I wasn’t the only one having problems.

A few months later, as I walked up the stage in front of hundreds of people, I bowed my head as Nanay put a medal on me. Officially a BSN graduate, I was just so thankful to have been given a chance to redeem myself.

Come to think of it, I wouldn’t have done anything differently- not just because I’ve learned so much from three different industries, but also because I got to discover what I really wanted in life. I had my fun, didn't I? Now it's time to move on and get serious. We live and we learn, and without regrets.

Most of us friends are now past the crisis, and ready to undertake new challenges and new adventures our thirties will bring. Some of us are moving up the ladder, some are building families, some are learning the difference between a calling and a career, and for sure- all of us are more optimistic than ever before.

How my Sister Brought Home a Wife

Those words were actually uttered by Haidy, one of my most interesting classmates last semester. She was referring to her sister, who is a lesbian, whom I met when our group stayed at their place in Marabut. That’s not all, she also has a brother who is gay, and three more straight siblings. She is Catholic and some in her family are members of El Shaddai; her sister’s “wife” on the other hand, is Aglipay. A universal household, that’s what she called her family.

Kalog, sincere, and utterly humorous Haidy is a girl you’ll surely grow fond of. She refused to act as the patient in one of the return demos in RLE because she confessed she had “smelly feet”. How many girls would dare admit that in front of the entire class?”

Surprisingly sensitive when it came to her family, she wept a river of tears as she divulged the drama in her household during a recollection at school. In a heartbeat, she was all smiles and joking around again. There is a screw loose in her head, perhaps that’s why I relate so much with her.

She tries so hard in her studies, you would want her to succeed. I know she will. This semester is the final determinant on who’s going and who’s staying. “2.2” The dean simply says. I just remembered her SMS when we got our final grades in Anatomy, where she initially had a conditional standing during the midterms.

“Kuya, 2.6 akon final grade ha Ana! I’m so happy!”

Me too, Haids.

200th Post

It had long been customary for me to post something very personal on every 50th post. This would be the 200th, but instead of me bitching and moaning, I'll have my close friends, former officemates, classmates do that for me. These are actually just a compilation of my Friendster testimonials.
· Thaddeus Hinunagan! Well what can I say about this person? Let me just say 2 words about this person that would describe him the best...SHOPAHOLIC and VAIN!! · Thaddeus or Thaddy as we call him, is one of a kind! He has always been full of zest for life and if ever you need one of those inspiring and contemplative talks about intricacies of the human psyche or of the roads less travelled, of the mountains yet to be conquered, call Thad-- I swear, you won't be disappointed to hear his thoughts as this guy is more than driven to live out his life and inspire others to do the same.:-) A word of caution though: his enthusiasm is contagious so don't be surprised if you find yourself nodding and packing your bags for a Sagada trip the next day!: ) We miss you Thad! Hope to see you again and carpe diem, as always! : )
- Mayen

Visit From an old Friend

The air conditioning was cold, and it felt like I was in the Arctic. We were at the last full show of Transformers in Megamall. Josh was on my right, and to my left my twin sis Tatat. We were seated too close to the screen (Tatat insisted, because she was nearsighted), and the images on the screen to me was gigantic and distorted. Probably because I was half-asleep.. or was I drunk? No, that happened later.

The faces of the blue-eyed actress and the cute nerdy guy swirled in my half-conscious state. The graphics were spectacular, but it was hardly enough to lift my eyelids. My hands were inside my T-shirt (I usually do this when I have no jacket and I’m extremely cold), and while my limbs were warmed by my torso, a few tendrils of cold still bit my leg. It was a bad time to wear shorts.

At last the movie was finished. We made our way to the exits hurriedly as we were to meet up with a few more friends before we head to Tat’s apartment. The strangest thing- it had been almost three years since Tat and I were together, since the time I transferred to the US track and after that deciding to quit and study, but it was as if those years had never been.

Nothing changed (except maybe that she gained a little weight, but heck, so did I!). I saw her breezing through the doors and it was as if we saw each other just the other day. It’s hard to explain- you know this feeling like when you left home to study in another place, then you come back after four years and the moment you step inside- it’s home! Familiar, warm, and comfortable. You are your old self again, and if there are any adjustments, it just takes seconds to get used to it.

We never run out of stories. From gossip- who’s dating who, who’s sleeping with who, who got the boot- to reminiscing (“Remember that guy I used to date...”), to new experiences, and more gossip. Perhaps it’s a sign of lasting friendship- that genuine fondness for each other, which no amount of separation could tarnish.

As I sit across from her, as she gestures while she’s talking (and waving a lit cigarette in her hand), I wonder- would we still be friends when we’re sixty? I’d bet on it.

A Letter to Anamarie

Dear Ate Anamarie David-Cavanero,

I have a new nickname for you: GC. Gorgeous Centenarian? Gregarious Chimera? Grade Conscious! I noticed your name comes up first when they announce the results of the midterm exams and unit tests alike, while me, Stephanie and Gelo, in various orders, come in after. Hmph!

I never knew a matter of 2-6 points could make all the difference. I observed you during one of our exams with your brow knit in concentration. As for me, I don’t bother to dissect any further. If I’m unsure of the answer, I simply pick my best guess and move on- I just wanted to get the hell out of there! I admire your persistence. For that I’ll stop watching foreign films during exam week and read as diligently as you do ; )

Seriously though, I think you deserve a pat in the back. It’s not easy to be a mother of two kids and make good with school responsibilities at the same time- and on top of that you have to deal with a bitch of a commute from Alang-alang to Tacloban daily. Hats off to you!!

I just love our conversations (over French fries and sundaes) about life stories, school issues, and virtually anything our delightfully unhinged minds touch. Grabe ka mang-okray ha! I admire you as a woman. I remember the stories you told me when you eloped with your husband, fought against the odds while in the big city, and finally your transformation to a mother. I learned a lot, so from the bottom of my nonexistent uterus, I thank you.

In closing, I just wanted to say that the top position is yours for the meantime, but still up for grabs in the 2nd half of the semester (Finals!). We are certainly going to try and wrestle for it, but for now suot mo ang Koronang Itim. Hahahaha!

Love,

Dorina

Fun, Fearless, Female: Cha Cabrera

She insists she’s 19. Taller than most girls, you won’t miss her in a crowd. But you’ll surely notice her one way or another- she’s loud and has a personality that pops. Cha speaks her mind, and is never apologetic. “Never explain yourself”, she says, “because people who like you don’t need explanations, and people who dislike you won’t believe it.”

The question isn’t who she’s dated, instead who she hasn’t dated. This feisty girl certainly won’t wait for a fairy godmother to help her in the romance department. We could hardly sit in a party or a club without bumping into one of her exes. As with any sensible woman, Cha does have her boundaries. If anything, I admire her for being honest. She might not be a demure debutante, but she remains true to herself at all times.

Romeo and Juliet, TV Style

Falling in love.. first kiss..
The Break-up.
Ross gets married.. and says Rachel's name
"I'm still in love with you, Ross."
Drunken couple elopes in Vegas..
.. and then gets divorced.
Have a baby together by a drunken mistake..
And in the end.
Final scene in Friends shows an empty apartment.
This was one of my all time favorite sitcoms. The final scene never fails to tug at my heart- it reminds me of the time when I moved out and moved on (hmm probably the biggest change I've made in my life.. basta ; ). Like that sitcom, I guess it is a closed chapter already, and I'm quite ready to make new memories ; )

Dating Lingo: Read Between The Lines

Thanks to my recent Friends marathon, I got these pointers on how to decipher what your date is saying.
What they say:
"We should do this again sometime.."
What they really mean is:
"You will never see me naked!"
What they say:
"Maybe we should see other people.."
What they really mean is:
"Ha-ha I already am!"

What they say:
"It’s not you.."
What they really mean is:
"It's YOU."

What they say:
"I need some time to think.."
What they really mean is:
"It's over!"

Boy: "Wanna get together tonight?" Girl: "We'll see.."
What she really was saying: "NO!! I'd rather be boiled alive than be stuck with you!"

What he says: "You are a beautiful woman/ pretty girl."
What he really means: What great tits you have!

What they say: "Wanna come up for a drink?"
What they really mean is: "I've got fur handcuffs upstairs and I want to use them on you!"

Rhaulynmaejogejotiqueotinbisongbachinivillaroelviudadejopello

If you can figure that out, hats off to you! That was actually the nickname that our former houseboy/girl insisted we call him/her. His real name was simply Raul; he was dark skinned, tall, and very skinny (19” waist!). He was such a hilarious character- he would always insist he is the younger sister of Carmina Villaroel (since they both had the same last name). He would gleefully scream when he saw Carmina on the TV screen during commercials, and would always refer to her as “Ate Carmina” when discussing new info about his “sister”.

He described their house (he was from the hometown of my grandmother) as similar to a train- long and narrow. He would always dazzle me, my brothers, and my cousins stories of his outrageous conquests. The “Bachini” and “Jopello” from his nickname above were derived from our two hunky next door neighbors.

Like any debutante, Rhaulyn mae (don’t make me type the entire nickname, I beg of you) would get out of the gate to “sweep” dried leaves from the driveway. He of course, had a “balls-eye view” of the guys playing basketball (we were the corner lot and the ring was nailed at the Leyeco post fronting our gate). After which, he sits demurely and watches his crushes get sweaty.

He was obsessed with Wowee (circa the 90’s) and the Universal Motion Dancers. He and my cousin would always do their latest dance moves. He stayed with us for only a year, and had to go home to finish high school (good for him!). He sent us a funny letter saying that he wouldn’t be able to visit us because “my moder angry me”, according to him. And that he was planning to go to manila “togeder wit the UMD”.

I guess the reason why I am writing about him is that he embodies a characteristic most PLUs have- despite the hardships of life one can still manage to be cheerful and jolly. Last I heard, Rhaulyn was working as a “sales lady” (his preferred job title), and wears his hair to his shoulders and four inch heels to the market where he sells dry goods. Work it girl!

The Best of Friends

I was in college, I think when Friends came out. It was only when I bought the DVD from seasons 1-10 that I was able to see all the episodes of one of my favorite sitcoms of all time. I could always relate to their predicaments- like having a crappy job, being unemployed, the woes of dating, the fear and loneliness, the excitement of making it on your own in a big city, and having great friends to share your success with.
When Rachel first knew she was going to be alright on her own. "I've got magic beans." Chandler breaks up with Janice..
Again,
And again.
Chandler, Janice, and his future wife Monica.
Joey kisses Chandler on New Year's uyy! ; )
Ross and his Great Love.
Rachel brings flowers for Ross, who was arriving from China..
Using the bouquet to "stop the bleeding", shocked at seeing him with his new squeeze Julie.

Ross and Rachel's first kiss. Finally!!
Monica, and the fake Monica who taught her a new side of herself.
Monica, 26 breaks up with Young Ethan, 17. "It would have worked out if you were older..
or if we lived in Biblical times."
Phoebe gives Monica a haircut ala Dudley Moore.
Joey moves out.
That was just the first CD. Stick around for more ; )

Fun Fearless Female: Remejoy Sagdullas

I resent that you think I only feature freaks in my Fun Fearless F_____ (fill in the blank, try not to use four letter words since we are PG 13 here LOL!) posts. These bitches are close to my heart.
Remejoy or Yojemer as she would put it in her friendster, has been a friend of mine since I was 13. High school was a hoot because of our barkada. She's talkative, witty, gutsy, and has a few screws loose in her head. That's what I love about her.. Rem puts the "HO" back in Homo.
Once we made a "movie" and she was filming a dramatic scene with a classmate. I sneaked into the background and sashayed ala Naomi Campbell (odiba magka-batch kami!). My famous walk was seen in editing, but luckily cut from the final film. Whew! It was so much fun though because we were laughing all over. Presently, this Ho is working as an editor in Ortigas, I think. Dear, hurry home we miss ya over here!

Fun Fearless Female: Iona Gay Miembro

Pangalan pa lang, bading na! hehe Seriously though, Noodle (her nickname) is a very fun and upbeat person and one of my dearest friends. Partner-in-crime ko yan palagi sa mga Galera escapades namin dati.
Check this testimonial that Noodle made for me:
Thad is my good friend, the best boss i ever had. Siya lang nagbigay sa akin ng trust and bilib kaya ginawa nya akong employee of the month nun sa INFO. Never a dull moment when i`m with him. Super love namin ang galera at kahit na storming at stranded sa port eh pilitin pa rin na makapunta. I miss you so much, yung team natin, graveyard shift, good people sa team. everything. I miss hanging out with you, tatat, bonnie and bevs. Nung nalaman ko na siya TL ko, i know na makakasundo ko sya agad. why? sa atin na lang yun diba Thad. Super bait talaga, down to earth, lagi pang naka smile kaya love kita talaga eh. pero nagpakalayo ka naman kasi. well me too :-( . sana pagbalik ko jan makita na kita ha, the last time kasi busy busyhan ka. good luck and i miss you so much. love you. you take care for me. kelangan makapag bora na tayo next time ha. i`ll just be around, hit me up anytime aight.
She's currently a Japayuki. Let me correct myself, she works as an English instructor at a Language school in Japan. Hope I'm not too busy when you get home this year! I'll see ya soon!
